Stepping Up for Health: Know Your Risk

The Importance of Breast Health and Understanding Risk

Dr. Lannis Hall

The Hazelwood “Tell Your Momma” Breast Health Partnership is a collaboration between Hazelwood School District and Siteman Cancer Center that brings evidence-based breast health education directly to high school students at Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, and Hazelwood West. Since its inception, the program has reached more than 7,500 young women, equipping them with critical information about early detection, modifiable risk factors, and screening resources they can share with their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other loved ones.

My name is Dr. Lannis Hall, Director of Radiation Oncology at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital and Professor of Clinical Radiation Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine. Each year, I have the privilege of leading these assemblies and challenging our students to take what they have learned home to “tell their momma” about the importance of mammograms, to understand warning signs, and to share information about free and low-cost screening options with the loved ones in their lives.

The program promotes healthy eating and exercise to reduce cancer risk. Hazelwood’s three high schools recently competed in the Stepping Up for Health Smoothie Competition, creating recipes with fresh fruits and vegetables. A Salad Showdown is planned later this year, with judging by peers and guest judges.

We encourage you to complete both:

  1. Complete Hazelwood Parent/Guardian Survey and complete your breast cancer risk assessment (you will be automatically redirected to the risk assessment upon survey completion) to help you and your family understand your personal risk for breast cancer and other cancers, along with practical, evidence-based steps you can take to lower that risk.
  2. Explore free screening options like Show Me Healthy Women and the Breast Health Outreach Program.

Hazelwood School District and Siteman Cancer Center have partnered to present information on breast health for the Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, and Hazelwood West students. The goal is to educate students on what they can do now for a healthier longer life in the future. The event discussed essential tips on healthy eating habits, ways to prevent breast cancer, and early detection information.
