Pedal the Cause Donates $4.1 Million to St. Louis Cancer Research Institutions

|

Pedal the Cause is thrilled to announce the results of 2021 fundraising with a total donation of $4,180,536 to Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. The announcement was made Thursday night at Pedal the Cause’s Check Presentation Celebration at The Factory in Chesterfield.

100 percent of the funds raised will support innovative cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Since 2010, Pedal the Cause has supported 175 unique research projects and raised and donated a total of $36,263,645. Donated funds will be granted to the most promising research projects as determined by each institution.

After a remote-only participation option in 2020, Pedal the Cause returned to an in-person event in September of 2021, with 3,672 participants signing up for cycling, spinning or at-home virtual activities. Participants and teams raised funds from April through October.

“The generosity of Pedal the Cause, including donors, sponsors, riders, volunteers and others, is an investment in science, health, our community and ourselves,” said Tim Eberlein, MD, director of Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. “The millions of dollars raised since 2010 have launched multiple new approaches to reducing the burden of cancer on all of us. Together, we are making cancer a chronic disease – a very important step toward our ultimate goal: creating a world without cancer.”

“When your singular focus and mission is to realize a world without cancer through innovative research, you need a world-class partner who can translate dollars into results,” said David Drier, Executive Director at Pedal the Cause. “We are fortunate to have just that in Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.”

Currently, one in two men and one in three women will develop cancer in their lifetime. Even with major advances in treatment, cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US. The generous support of sponsors, led by Edward Jones, ensures that 100 percent of donations made to Pedal the Cause directly fund cancer research. Pedal the Cause is the region’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event, and funds early-stage research ideas using the venture capital model.
