Joanne Knight Breast Health Center

The Joanne Knight Breast Health Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine has been a designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology since the designation was first awarded.

The designation means that the facility is fully accredited in all imaging methods.

The Breast Health Center offers a full array of all-digital breast imaging services, including screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI.

The Breast Health Center is now a all-3D site. 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, enables radiology technologists to obtain breast images from multiple angles, reducing the potential for patient call-backs to obtain additional imaging scans. Studies have found that 3D breast tomosynthesis reduces the call back rate by up to 40 percent.

Specialized breast procedures include image-guided core needle biopsy, fine needle aspiration, cyst aspiration, and ductography to evaluate nipple discharge.

At the Breast Health Center, breast imaging services are adjacent to the breast surgical team and in close proximity to medical oncologists. The synergy between the linked practices facilitates rapid referral and care.

Radiology

Our radiologists are part of a team of Washington University Physicians that includes sub-specialized breast health experts who are affiliated with the internationally recognized Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology.

All radiology technologists on staff have advanced certification in breast mammography and have undergone rigorous training in breast anatomy and physiology, positioning and compression, as well as imaging of patients with breast implants.

Medical records transfer and second opinions

Previous breast imaging scans done at other institutions can be obtained free of charge for patients interested in transferring medical records to our imaging specialists. Patients must authorize consent for all medical records transfers. Previous images will then be compared to current mammogram studies at our facility. Second opinion consultations also are offered and can be scheduled.

Patient navigation

Specially trained breast health patient navigators are available to guide patients through diagnostic and treatment services. Patients or providers may request a patient navigator upon referral or when scheduling an appointment.
