The study of healthcare epidemiology, which includes the study of nosocomial infections, specifically surgical site infections, blood stream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia. We study risk factors and outcomes and costs of these infections as well as how to prevent them. We use hospital-based information systems and informatics to do electronic surveillance. Recently we have begun to study the epidemiology of medical errors. We have developed new reporting systems for medical errors, and we are studying the risk factors and outcomes of medical errors in order to develop strategies to prevent them.
