The Blood Cancer Center

At Siteman’s Blood Cancer Center, WashU Medicine physicians and scientists are advancing how we treat patients with a blood cancer diagnosis. Siteman is renowned for our breakthroughs in immunotherapy, where a patient’s own cells fight cancer. Our experts transform blood-forming stem cells and cells from the immune system into cellular therapies that bring patients lasting remissions and cures.

Patients who are treated through the Blood Cancer Center benefit from a dynamic, research-focused environment.  We call this “bench to bedside” which means our physicians’ laboratory research often becomes part of their patients’ care. Many patients are enrolled in clinical trials that provide access to leading-edge therapies.

The WashU Medicine physicians and specialists at the Blood Cancer Center collaborate on patient treatment plans. Our multi-disciplinary treatment teams include experts who are subspecialized as medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, hematologists, transplant specialists, other specialized physicians and nurses. Every team member is excellent at coordinating both in-patient and out-patient care.

Siteman’s Legacy

The Blood Cancer Center is anchored by Siteman’s nationally renowned stem cell transplant program that began in 1982. Over 40 years, we have expanded, performing over 10,000 stem cell transplants and innovating new approaches to treatment.

Our legacy of discovery continues. Today Siteman holds a Specialized Program in Research Excellence (SPORE) in leukemia, a grant awarded by the National Cancer Institute. Our SPORE recognizes Siteman’s research abilities and accelerates them, bringing breakthroughs to patients’ bedsides. Siteman is one of the few cancer centers in the U.S. to hold multiple SPORE grants.
