Definition of bilirubin

bilirubin (BIH-lih-ROO-bin): Substance formed when red blood cells are broken down. Bilirubin is part of the bile, which is made in the liver and is stored in the gallbladder. The abnormal buildup of bilirubin causes jaundice.
