Mentorship Statement

I have a track-record of mentoring trainees in the molecular and cell biology related to MDS and I continue to bring my experience in basic science and spliceosome gene mutations to mentor trainees. I have mentored 10 post-doctoral fellows, 6 pre-doctoral students (including 3 URiM students), 8 post-baccalaureates, and 12 undergraduates, including 6 URiM undergraduate students. I am a former co-director of The Lucille P. Markey Special Emphasis Pathway in Human Pathobiology at WUSM, an innovative educational experience introducing pre-doctoral PhD students to human disease states not generally covered in graduate courses. I value mentoring and am committed to the success of trainees. I meet formally once a week to discuss research, and quarterly to review career development progress. Trainees will also formally present their research progress every 6 months to several well-established senior investigators in our division with proven track-records in mentoring scientists. Trainees will participate in a weekly journal club dedicated to hematopoiesis literature, participate in grant writing, and have an opportunity to mentor students. We will develop an individual development plan (IDP) to assist trainees in career and personal development.
