Pedal the Cause Raises $5 Million in 2023 for Cancer Research

Pedal the Cause, the nonprofit organization working to create a world without cancer, announced its most successful fundraising effort ever — resulting in $5 million in 2023 for innovative cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

The announcement took place Nov. 15 during a check presentation celebration at The Factory in Chesterfield.

Pedal the Cause brings together donors, sponsors, riders and volunteers for an annual cycling-centered event in September. Since 2010, the organization has backed 211 research projects, raising and donating a total of $45.8 million.

“Thank you to the Pedal the Cause community for helping create phenomenal momentum and progress in cancer research and treatment,” said Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, director of Siteman Cancer Center. “Without this incredible partnership of Pedal participants, we would not be able to lead the country in groundbreaking discoveries that lead to new treatments for our patients — and more hope!”

Pedal the Cause operates on a venture capital model, funding early-stage research ideas. On average, the supported projects go on to secure an average of $12 in federal funding for every $1 initially invested. These projects have influenced various cancer types, improved treatments, and initiated multiple clinical trials at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids.

“Crossing the $5 million mark has been a goal of ours for many years,” said David Drier, executive director of Pedal the Cause. “After a remarkable event in September, we felt this momentum from our community to push our impact further than we’ve ever gone. We are deeply thankful to all our Pedal the Cause riders, fundraisers, donors, sponsors and supporters for making 2023 one for the history books. The impact of these dollars is bringing us ever closer to our shared mission of creating a world without cancer.”

In 2023, more than 3,000 participants of all ages engaged with Pedal the Cause through various activities, raising funds from March to October. The generous support of sponsors, led by Edward Jones, ensures that 100% of donations go directly to advancing cancer research.

Looking ahead, Pedal the Cause 2024 is scheduled for Sept. 21 and 22 at a new location, The Family Arena in St. Charles.
